Al Fann (Feb.21, 1925 - Oct. 14, 2018) - A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Al Fann began his career as an understudy in Shakespeare’s ”Flute” (reading lines and stage directions).  His first professional break came in 1953 when he did a song and dance routine on The Bob Hope Network Television Show. 

His education and experience in the performing arts, which has spanned over 25 years, came from his base at the internationally famed Karamu Theatre. He worked and studied every aspect of theatre, including directing and theatre management.  Al Fann was appointed Assistant Director and served eight years under the guidance of  Dr. Benno Frank, Director of Musical Productions. 


Even at the early stages of his career, critics acclaimed his directing, acting and singing talents. He performed:   Gitlow in “Public Victorious”;  Walter Lee in “A Raisin in the Sun”; The Emperor in “Emperor Jones”; Cicero in “Jamaica” to name only a few.  He then went on to perform in principal singing and dance roles in 137 full-length productions at the Karamu Theatre with such actors as Ron O’Neal and Minnie Gentry, Robert Guillaume and Beverly Todd.  

Throughout his stay at the Karamu Theatre he also hosted his own singing radio show - “Sunday Morning Serenade”, attended the Cleveland Institute of Music, studying voice and dramatic arts, was bass singer of  the popular singing group “The traveling Sons of Harmony”…
